"'Am I the only one who thinks this world is fucking crazy?!'
"The good news is, no, you're not the only one who thinks this world is fucking crazy. The bad news is, this world is fucking crazy. Lucky for you, you're a skateboarder, so as alienated and isolated from society as you may feel, you know you're not the only one. Most people don't have this advantage. When most people see things they don't understand or can't relate to, such as war or Wall Street, they assume that they must be the crazy ones. When non-skateboarders watch the news and feel like there's something they do not understand, something strange and scary, they change the channel. They watch American Idol or the Super Bowl instead, or think about what to buy next to make themselves feel better about being their boss's puppet. This is not an accident. If people openly acknowledged a sense of disenchantment with the direction society is heading it would be a very big problem for the people in control. That would undermine their entire skewed molestation of democracy. But that's what media control and propaganda are for. That's why people aren't allowed to organize unions in the work place. I won't go into it here, but Noam Chomsky wrote a whole book about it. Anyway, you don't have to worry about being tricked into questioning yourself while staying in line, because you're a skateboarder. When skateboarders get frustrated with society, they go skate, together.
"By no means am I saying that all skateboarders get along, or that there aren't cliques or factions. But we all have similar values, and we all know that this world is fucking crazy, not us. 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend.' Skateboarders are forced by society to be suspicious of authority. Cops are pigs - they thrive on, and perpetuate, a wold of shit. They are the mindless arm of a heartless system. They work for the ruling class - the business class. They are the enforcers of the world view that thinks money and private property are the only things that matter. Our society judges success based solely on financial income. But skateboarders all know that there is far more to live for than money. Skateboarders are familiar with failure and sacrifice and understand that happiness and success are free. Skateboarders know that success results from commitment and cooperation rather than greed and competition. Snaking people and one-upping people is not rewarded in skateboarding, in direct contrast with the capitalist agenda that seeks to exploit every weakness. We don't realize it because it's unintentional, and that's a sign of a genuine counter-culture. We see the world in a completely different way. We don't see barriers, we see wall-rides.
"So when the economy crumbles and sea level rises and shit hits the fan and the government turns the army on us, skateboarders will all be throwing rocks in the same direction."
